Mount Everest remains left on slopes due to extreme conditions

An estimated 200 people have died on Mount Everest, with many remains left on the icy slopes due to extreme environmental conditions. The area above 7,924 meters, known as the ‘death zone,’ presents lethal challenges including extremely thin air, freezing temperatures, and violent storms.

Recovering bodies from these heights is a dangerous and costly endeavor. It often requires tens of thousands of dollars and a specialized team of experienced Sherpas. The risk of further casualties among rescue teams is high due to the treacherous terrain and lack of oxygen. Because the freezing temperatures preserve remains, bodies often become frozen to the rock faces, making relocation nearly impossible. To show respect, climbing groups often attempt to move remains out of the main climbing paths when safe to do so.
