Mount Fuji Rising Sun Flag display sparks criticism from South Korean professor
Seo Gyeong-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women's University in South Korea, has raised concerns regarding the display of the Rising Sun Flag at a mountain hut on Mount Fuji. Following reports and photographic evidence, Professor Seo stated that the flag, which he described as a symbol of militarism and imperialism used during Japan's invasions of Asian nations, was seen flying from a flagpole at a tourist site.
Professor Seo expressed concern that international tourists visiting Mount Fuji may view the flag as a symbol of Japan without understanding its historical context. He criticized the presence of the flag as a denial of the history of war crimes and aggression. He also noted that similar designs have appeared on popular souvenirs, such as wooden stamps used by climbers. In response to ongoing reports from South Korean tourists, Seo announced plans to produce multilingual video content to raise awareness about the historical implications of the flag.
