Mount Fuji to implement stricter off-season climbing rules

Authorities in Japan are implementing stricter regulations for climbing Mount Fuji during the off-season to deter unprepared hikers and manage safety risks. Starting in September 2027, Yamanashi Prefecture, which manages the mountain’s northern route, plans to charge climbers for helicopter rescue services if they attempt to scale the mountain without proper authorization or preparation.

Under the proposed rules, anyone climbing above the sixth station between early September and July must submit a detailed climbing plan in advance, including intended routes and equipment lists. Those who provide these details and possess appropriate gear may be exempt from rescue fees. The cost for helicopter interventions is estimated to be based on fuel consumption, potentially costing around 8,000 yen for every five minutes of flight time.

Shizuoka Prefecture, which oversees the southern routes, is also preparing penalties for climbers who fail to register their plans. To further restrict unauthorized access during official closures, authorities plan to utilize barricades and sensors to monitor and alert officials to climbers attempting to ascend the volcano.
