Mount Himlung avalanche kills 15 Nepali expedition workers

An avalanche at the base camp of Mount Himlung, a 7,126-metre peak in north-central Nepal, has killed at least 15 Nepali expedition workers. The disaster occurred early Sunday during severe weather near the border with China.

Rescuers from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association recovered eight additional bodies on Thursday, bringing the confirmed death toll to 15. The victims were Nepali nationals who were preparing the camp for foreign clients arriving for the autumn climbing season. Ten other climbers from the group were successfully located by rescue teams.

Search efforts involved digging through more than four metres of snow to reach tents and facilities. While rescuers have located most of the group, one expedition worker remains missing. Due to ongoing mountain hazards and volatile weather, recovery operations have been temporarily concluded, with further efforts dependent on improving conditions.
