Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke grows to 276 hectares
The Mount Jack wildfire near Sooke, British Columbia, has grown to approximately 276 hectares. Initially discovered on September 20 as a two-hectare fire, the human-caused blaze has been driven by warm, dry, and windy conditions.
Recent rainfall has helped moderate the fire's behavior. The BC Wildfire Service reported that overnight rain reduced the activity to a “smouldering ground fire with no open flame,” categorized as Rank 1. While the fire remains “out of control,” officials noted no significant growth in the last 24 hours.
Approximately 65 personnel, including ground crews, heavy equipment operators, and helicopter support, are working to expand containment. Currently, the wildfire does not pose a threat to structures, critical infrastructure, or public safety. However, as a precaution, the Capital Regional District has closed access to Kapoor Regional Park and portions of the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. Smoke continues to be visible in the Greater Victoria and South Cowichan Valley areas.
