Mount Kenya wildfire reaches 85% containment after massive blaze
A major wildfire on Mount Kenya, which began on September 1, 2026, has been 85 percent contained after burning through significant portions of the mountain's moorlands and forests.
Estimates of the damage vary. The conservation organization Rhino Ark reported that approximately 8,700 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed. However, Meru County Conservator Wellington Ndaka provided a much larger estimate, stating that nearly 30,000 acres have been consumed across four forest stations: Ruthumbi, Mucheene, Marania, and Meru.
The fire, which reportedly started near Rutundu Lodge, was fueled by high winds, dry weather, and flammable shrubs. The blaze poses a threat to critical bamboo trees and the broader ecosystem. Because Mount Kenya serves as a vital natural reservoir, the fire impacts water security for several watersheds in central and eastern Kenya, affecting households, agriculture, and wildlife corridors.
A multi-agency response is underway, involving the Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Defence Forces, and local communities. While the northern front near the Marania forest has been contained, efforts continue to manage remaining hotspots and difficult terrain.
