Mount Olympus Near UNESCO World Heritage List as Committee Reviews Nomination

Greece has formally nominated Mount Olympus, the mythological home of the twelve Olympian gods, for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as a mixed cultural‑and‑natural site. The World Heritage Committee will consider the nomination at its session in Busan, South Korea, from 19 July to 29 July 2026.

Mayor Evagelos Geroliolios of Dion‑Olympus said, “Olympus is our life. It is the place we grew up in,” adding that the mountain carries “myth, history, biodiversity, extraordinary beauty and a very great cultural weight.” The site boasts snow‑capped peaks rising to 2 918 m, endemic flora and fauna, a Hellenistic open‑air sanctuary linked to Plutarch’s writings, the highest‑altitude Orthodox chapel of Prophet Elias, monastic ruins from 1542, and the Holy Cave of St Dionysios. Interest in the nomination may be heightened by the release of Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey,” which portrays Olympus as Zeus’ throne.

If approved, the designation would raise the mountain’s global profile, potentially increasing tourism while imposing stricter conservation responsibilities on local authorities and communities.
