Mount Olympus seeks UNESCO World Heritage status

Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece and the legendary home of the 12 Olympian gods, is being considered for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site under a mixed cultural and natural category. The nomination highlights the mountain's archaeological significance, including Hellenistic-era sanctuaries, and its religious history, which includes Christian Orthodox structures like the Prophet Elias peak chapel.

Beyond its mythological and historical value, the site is recognized for its diverse ecosystems and endemic species. The formal nomination is currently undergoing evaluation by advisory bodies, and the World Heritage Committee is expected to review the status during its meeting in Busan, South Korea.

In a show of interfaith support, Rajan Zed, President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, has endorsed the bid. Zed described the mountain as a global symbol of shared religious and cultural heritage, noting that recognizing such sacred landscapes promotes interfaith understanding and the preservation of humanity’s spiritual narratives.
