Mount Olympus seeks UNESCO World Heritage listing as Nolan film debuts

Mount Olympus in Greece has been nominated to join the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed cultural and natural site. The candidature, first placed on Greece's tentative list in 2014, will be reviewed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee at its meeting in Busan, South Korea, from Sunday through July 29.

Local mayor Evagelos Geroliolios said the mountain is central to Greek identity and its protection is of global interest. The nomination coincides with the theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s film “Odyssée,” which portrays Olympus as the home of Zeus and the Olympian gods.
