Mount Othrys climbers urge gentle tourism over wind turbines

Representatives of the Almyros Mountaineering Club met with the Regional Governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, to advocate for the protection of Mount Othrys against large-scale renewable energy projects. The club expressed strong opposition to the installation of wind turbines on the mountain's summits, arguing that such developments could disrupt the natural environment.

Instead, the club proposed a model of “gentler development” focused on alternative tourism. They highlighted the region's potential for hiking, climbing, and cave exploration. A recently completed network of 14 trails, totaling approximately 120 kilometers, was noted as a key asset. The club also emphasized the area's significant geological features, including approximately 100 caves, 35 of which have already been mapped by local speleological researchers.
