Mount Parnassus connections to Odysseus highlighted by Nolan film

The global cinematic success of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ has prompted a renewed interest in the mythological connections between the hero Odysseus and the Mount Parnassus region in Greece.

Mythological traditions link Odysseus to the Parnassus area through his mother, Anticleia, the daughter of Autolycus. Autolycus, a legendary king known as a thief of herds, is said to have resided on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus, with the Mycenaean site of Castrouli near modern-day Desfina proposed as his likely seat.

Local legends also recount a personal encounter during Odysseus’s youth, when he went hunting on Mount Parnassus with his uncles. During the hunt, a wild boar attacked him, wounding his leg with a tusk, an event that led to his care by Autolycus.
