Mount Rainier wildfire reaches 57% containment

The Grand Park 2 Fire in Mount Rainier National Park is currently 57% contained, covering approximately 167 acres. Firefighting efforts have been bolstered by an international mutual aid compact, which has deployed over 300 personnel to the region, including an Australian task force leader.

While containment is progressing faster than initially estimated—with a target date of September 1—officials are monitoring a weather shift. A warming and drying trend expected from Wednesday through Friday may increase the risk of fire growth as finer fuels dry out. Conversely, wetter weather presents risks regarding treacherous terrain and slip hazards for crews.

Several areas remain impacted by closures. The Sunrise Visitor Center and the road to Sunrise are closed until further notice. While the White River Wilderness Information Center and White River Campground have reopened to permit holders, various trails in the Grand Park area and those originating from closed park roads remain inaccessible.
