Mount Shasta climber survives 500-foot fall and crawls to safety

Mount Shasta glissading accident search and rescue Avalanche Gulch mountain climbing safety

A climber from San Jose survived a harrowing ordeal on Mount Shasta after a 500-foot fall during a descent. The individual successfully summited the 14,179-foot volcano on a Thursday before attempting to glissade down the Avalanche Gulch route.

During the descent, the climber lost control of the slide, resulting in significant lacerations and severe foot injuries. After his cellphone died, the climber was forced to remove his boots due to intense swelling and spent the night crawling through the dark terrain to reach the remote Horse Camp Cabin.

A hiker discovered the injured man at the cabin on Friday, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation involving the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service Climbing Rangers, and California Highway Patrol. The climber was subsequently airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, forest officials issued safety recommendations for climbers, emphasizing the importance of carrying backup electronic devices, maintaining a noon turnaround time, and ensuring sufficient daylight remains for descents.
