Indonesia raises domestic flight fuel surcharge cap to 40%

Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation has increased the maximum fuel surcharge (FS) for scheduled domestic commercial flights to 40 percent. This adjustment follows a 6.5 percent rise in avtur prices, which reached an average of Rp23,315 per liter as of September 1, 2026. While the 40 percent cap is the new ceiling, airlines maintain the discretion to set lower rates based on their specific business strategies.

In North Sumatra, flight operations at Kualanamu International Airport were recently disrupted due to volcanic ash from Mount Sinabung. The eruption, which sent ash clouds up to 14,000 feet, caused significant flight cancellations and delays, including routes between Jakarta and Medan. However, authorities confirmed that operations returned to normal by September 2 after testing showed no detectable volcanic ash on the premises.

Separately, North Sumatra's Deputy Governor Surya has called on Garuda Indonesia to restore the direct flight route between Kualanamu and Nias to stimulate regional economic growth and tourism. Meanwhile, in Papua Selatan, the government is progressing with plans for the Rp2.23 trillion Wanam Airport to support the regional food estate project, with physical construction potentially starting in late 2026 pending land and environmental clearances.
