Indonesia faces widespread forest fires and volcanic activity
Indonesia is facing a dual crisis of widespread forest and land fires (karhutla) and increased volcanic activity. In East Java, the Banyuwangi government has declared a 14-day emergency for fires in the Ijen Crater, deploying water-bombing helicopters and weather modification efforts to combat the blaze.
In Kalimantan, massive haze has disrupted aviation at Supadio International Airport, causing flight cancellations. Satellite imagery from NASA confirms thick smoke covering much of the island. Environmental research from Geopix indicates that 78.5 percent of hotspots in Kalimantan are located within orangutan habitats, threatening the species with extinction.
Simultaneously, volcanic activity is rising. Five volcanoes, including Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Semeru, have reached Level III (Alert) status. The eruption of Gunung Sinabung has displaced hundreds of residents in North Sumatra. In East Kalimantan, the Nusantara Capital City (OIKN) authority reported evidence of tree logging in areas near the new capital that were subsequently affected by fires.
Oil and gas operations are also being impacted, with several operators in Indonesia reporting emergency or alert statuses due to nearby fires. Emergency response teams, including Manggala Agni and local disaster agencies, continue to fight fires across various provinces, including Central Kalimantan and North Kalimantan.
