Mount Sinabung erupts in Indonesia, sending 3,500-meter ash column skyward
Mount Sinabung on Sumatra island, Indonesia, erupted on Monday, sending a volcanic ash column approximately 3,500 meters above the summit. The eruption, which lasted about one hour, resulted in thick ashfall covering roads, vehicles, and buildings in the Karo Regency.
Following the increased activity, authorities raised the volcano's alert status from Level II (Watch) to Level III (Alert). A safety exclusion zone has been established within a three-kilometer radius of the summit, with a wider six-kilometer restricted sector to the southeast. Officials have warned of potential lahars in rivers originating from the volcano, particularly during heavy rainfall.
Approximately 615 residents from 211 families in Kuta Tengah village have been evacuated to emergency shelters in Sukatepu village. While no immediate casualties or injuries have been reported, local authorities are distributing masks to mitigate respiratory risks and have urged residents and tourists to avoid the restricted zones. The Indonesian Geological Agency warned that this may be an initial phase and more intense activity could follow.
