Mount Sinai Hospital stops accepting certain health insurance plans
Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan has stopped accepting new patients covered by certain health insurance plans, including Fidelis, Wellcare, and select EmblemHealth plans. The policy, which went into effect on August 1, applies strictly to new admissions; patients currently receiving care at the facility will be able to continue their existing treatments.
The hospital stated that it periodically reviews its participation in various health plans to make adjustments based on insurance agreement terms and the capacity to ensure quality care.
The New York State Nurses Association has condemned the move, arguing that the decision places vulnerable populations—such as children, the elderly, immigrants, and low-income residents—at risk. The association emphasized that as a non-profit system, Mount Sinai has a responsibility to serve the community, particularly given its status as one of the state's most prosperous hospital systems.
