Mount Sinai sued over needle allegedly left in patient's abdomen

A New York nurse and her husband have filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court against Mount Sinai hospital and three physicians, alleging that a surgical needle was left inside her abdomen.

Jana Petriganova DeGregoris, a nurse practitioner at the hospital network, claims the roughly 1.5-inch needle was left behind during one of two procedures performed between 2018 and 2021. The first was a C-section in June 2018, and the second was an abdominoplasty and hernia repair in November 2021. The lawsuit alleges the tool was “negligently, carelessly and improperly” left behind, causing years of unexplained physical pain.

The foreign object was reportedly discovered during a CT scan on October 14, 2025, leading to a subsequent surgery to remove it. The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages. The named doctors include Isabel Blumberg, Philip Torina, and Scott Nguyen. Mount Sinai and the physicians have not yet responded to requests for comment.
