Mount Snowdon hiker dies of heat stroke during descent

An inquest has been opened into the death of Sophie Goodyer-Bird, a 35-year-old beauty worker from Birmingham who died of heat stroke while descending Mount Snowdon in Wales.

On July 10, during a period of high temperatures in the United Kingdom, Ms. Goodyer-Bird reached the summit of the mountain, also known as Yr Wyddfa. During her descent, she experienced progressive fatigue before collapsing and becoming unresponsive. Despite efforts by fellow hikers to perform CPR, she could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 2:18 p.m.

Coroner Kate Robertson recorded the provisional cause of death as exertional heat stroke, which occurs when intense physical activity causes a dangerous increase in core body temperature. The incident occurred during the UK’s third heatwave of the summer, which saw temperatures exceeding 30°C in many areas. Ms. Goodyer-Bird leaves behind a 12-year-old son. The Eryri National Park Authority has reminded visitors that weather conditions on the mountain can change rapidly and advised hikers to carry sufficient food and water during warm weather.
