Mount Toba eruption impact was less severe than previously believed
New research from geoscientists suggests that the massive eruption of Mount Toba approximately 74,000 years ago did not cause the prolonged global volcanic winter previously thought to have threatened human survival. While the eruption expelled thousands of cubic kilometers of magma—roughly 1,000 times the volume of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption—the resulting climatic impact was significantly shorter and less severe than historical models predicted.
Jinheum Park of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and his team analyzed sediment layers from Lake Chala, located on the border of Kenya and Tanzania. By examining microscopic glass fragments and diatom stress levels within the lake's annual sediment layers, researchers determined that the environmental disruption lasted only about 18 months.
The study indicates that instead of a multi-decadal cooling event, the eruption likely caused a global temperature drop of approximately half a degree. Scientists attribute this discrepancy to the physics of sulfate aerosols; in ultra-large eruptions, heavier sulfate particles settle out of the stratosphere more quickly, reducing their effectiveness at reflecting solar radiation over long periods.
