Mount Vesuvius natural rock formation ‘Occhio del Diavolo’ collapses
The ‘Occhio del Diavolo’ (Devil’s Eye), a distinctive natural rock formation located in the Valle dell’Inferno within the Vesuvius National Park, has collapsed. The disappearance of the natural hole in the volcanic rock was documented on Monday, August 17, by local experts Vincenzo Marasco and Giuseppe Miranda.
Experts indicate that the collapse was not a sudden event but rather the result of a prolonged period of degradation. The structural failure is attributed to natural factors, including wind erosion, weathering, and the seismic activity associated with Mount Vesuvius. The loss marks the disappearance of a well-known geological landmark for hikers and visitors to the area.
