Mountain instability rises as melting permafrost triggers global disasters

Rising global temperatures are causing permafrost to melt and destabilizing mountain peaks worldwide. In the Himalayas, a massive glacial collapse between Nepal and Tibet recently triggered flash floods, resulting in at least 165 deaths and over 1,300 missing persons. Researchers note that while these events may not always follow the classic pattern of glacial lake outburst floods, the resulting waves of rock, ice, and water are equally devastating.

Similar patterns are being observed in the Alps, which researchers describe as a “small Nepal” due to comparable vulnerabilities. Last summer, the freezing level in the Alps remained above 4,300 meters for several weeks, accelerating terrain instability. Scientists are increasingly relying on satellite data to predict these collapses and understand the genesis of such natural disasters.

Experts warn that exceeding the 1.5°C global warming threshold risks a feedback loop: melting permafrost could release significant amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, further accelerating the climate crisis.
