Mountain rescue operations reported in Taiwan and China
Recent hiking incidents in Taiwan and China have highlighted the risks of unprepared trekking in mountainous regions. In Taiwan, an 18-year-old university student became lost while descending Mt. Gali in Miaoli County. The student, who lacked lighting equipment and warm clothing, was rescued by the Miaoli County Fire Bureau's Nanzhuang squad late at night after getting separated from companions.
In China, two 19-year-old students entered a restricted core protection zone in Yunnan's Habba Snow Mountain after following unofficial routes online. During the trek, one student suffered a femur fracture while stuck on a cliff at an altitude of 5,050 meters. Following a 25-hour rescue operation, the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture Forestry and Grassland Bureau issued an 8,000 yuan fine to the pair for violating nature reserve regulations and ordered them to cover over 90,000 yuan in rescue costs.
