Mountain Rescue Service warns of deteriorating tourism conditions in Bulgaria
The Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross has issued a warning regarding significantly deteriorating conditions for tourism across all mountains in Bulgaria. The advisory highlights a combination of adverse meteorological factors, including thick fog that severely limits visibility above 1,500 meters and heavy precipitation.
Depending on altitude, rainfall is expected to manifest as rain or snow, leading to wet and slippery terrain and rising river levels. Temperatures remain low for the season, with strong winds at higher elevations increasing the wind chill. There is also a risk of icing in high-altitude areas, which increases the danger of slips and falls.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) predicts predominantly cloudy skies with intermittent, intense rainfall. Above 2,000 meters, precipitation will consist of rain and snow, with the rain-snow line expected to drop as temperatures decrease. The MRS advises tourists to avoid high-altitude treks, especially in unfamiliar or unmarked terrain, and emphasizes the necessity of proper equipment, including waterproof clothing, stable footwear, and navigation tools like GPS or compasses.
