Mountain rescue services in Germany report increased emergency operations

Mountain rescue services in Germany report an increase in emergency calls and accidents involving hikers. In the Oberstdorf region, the Bergwacht conducted twelve operations between September 7 and 13, eight of which required helicopter assistance. Notable incidents included a hiker losing their way in the dark near Waltenberger Haus and several injuries requiring winch rescues in steep terrain.

In Saxon Switzerland, a hiker fell four to five meters into a rock crevice at the Carolafelsen, sustaining head injuries. This marks the sixth similar accident at that specific location this year. Data from the DRK Bergwacht Sachsen indicates a rise in overall rescue operations, with approximately 400 missions in the first half of the year compared to over 300 during the same period in the previous year.

Authorities are urging hikers to carry essential equipment, such as headlamps, as daylight hours decrease and temperatures drop in higher altitudes.
