Mountain View City Council candidates debate at business forum

Eight candidates for the Mountain View City Council participated in a forum hosted by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce on August 27. The event, moderated by Chamber CEO Peter Katz, aimed to outline the policy positions of those seeking one of the three seats available in the upcoming November 3 election.

The candidates reached a consensus on several key issues, including the need to simplify the permitting process for small businesses and support for a ballot measure to increase the city’s hotel tax. However, disagreements emerged regarding the development of additional housing and office space in the downtown district.

To foster economic growth, candidates proposed various strategies, such as improving transparency in city permitting and strengthening pre-lease assistance for new applicants. Local activist Ida Rose Sylvester emphasized the need for the city to ‘get out of business’s way’ to facilitate faster success for entrepreneurs.
