Mourning dove fledgling behavior and survival
Mourning dove fledglings typically leave the nest when they are between 12 and 15 days old. Although they have mostly developed feathers at this stage, they are not yet fully independent and often appear clumsy due to undeveloped flight skills.
Upon leaving the nest, these young birds generally remain within 50 to 100 feet of their original nesting site for several days. During this period, they rely on parental care for continued feeding and instruction on essential survival skills, such as finding food and avoiding predators. They often stay hidden in nearby vegetation to remain inconspicuous.
