Mouse studies link intermittent fasting and optogenetic stimulation to brain protection

A Japanese‑Chinese research team found that intermittent fasting limited the damaging effects of chronic stress on mouse brains, preserving myelin in regions linked to memory and emotion and reducing depression‑like behavior. The study also noted changes in gut microbiome diversity that may support brain health, though experts caution that fasting should be medically supervised.

Separately, researchers in the United Kingdom and the United States used optogenetic techniques to trigger deep‑sleep–like brain activity in awake mice, improving memory and lowering signs of neural fatigue. They propose that artificially inducing slow‑wave patterns could one day offer restorative benefits without actual sleep, though the work remains at an early experimental stage.
