Mouthwash and regular upkeep advised to keep washing machines odor‑free

Appliance repair specialist Ian Palmer‑Smith of Domestic & General recommends adding half a cup of alcohol‑based mouthwash to the detergent drawer and running an empty hot cycle every three months to kill bacteria and prevent mould and odour buildup in washing machines. He cautions that excess mouthwash can cause suds overflow and that high‑alcohol formulations may damage delicate fabrics.

General maintenance tips include cleaning the detergent drawer, lint filter and rubber door seal, using a mild bleach solution or white vinegar for deep cleaning, and running a hot, empty wash after scrubbing. To deter mould, users should leave the machine door ajar between loads to allow air‑drying, especially in damp spaces, and consider ditching fabric softeners which leave residues. Regular inspection of drainage and gasket integrity is also advised.
