Movement and strengthening can alleviate remote work pain
Prolonged sedentary behavior during remote work can lead to significant tension in the shoulders and back. Experts suggest that the primary issue is not the lack of a ‘perfect posture,’ but rather the lack of movement caused by remaining in the same position for extended periods.
To mitigate these effects, the World Health Organization recommends limiting sedentary time by integrating brief periods of physical activity throughout the day. Short, 20-minute sessions focusing on strengthening exercises, such as using dumbbells for the shoulders and back, can be effective. However, these sessions must prioritize technical execution and gradual progression over intensity to avoid aggravating existing muscle tension.
Individual factors such as sleep quality, stress levels, and pre-existing medical conditions also influence how the body responds to work-related physical strain. It is advised to seek professional medical evaluation if pain is persistent or accompanied by warning signs.
