Movimento 5 Stelle proposes amendments to Ilva decree
Senator Mario Turco, Vice President of the Movimento 5 Stelle, has submitted a package of amendments to the new Ilva decree for discussion in the Italian Senate. The proposal aims to address environmental protections, labor, land reclamation, and economic reconversion for Taranto.
Turco criticizes the government's decision to reduce the duration of financial guarantees to a single year, arguing that such measures only address emergencies rather than root causes. He advocates for guarantees to be tied to the actual level of industrial risk. Citing a June 2024 ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, Turco emphasized that health impact assessments must be integral to authorization processes and that activities should be suspended if there are serious risks to the environment or health.
The amendments also propose the removal of legal immunity (scudo penale) and the closure of the ‘area a caldo’ (hot area) within the facility.
