Movimiento Sumar coordinator navigates left-wing unity

Rosa Martínez, the general coordinator of Movimiento Sumar, is working to organize the party and prepare for upcoming elections following the leadership transition from Yolanda Díaz. While Díaz continues her roles as Minister of Labor and Second Vice President of the Government, Martínez is focused on defining the electoral brand, identifying partners, and selecting candidates.

A key challenge in the effort to unite the Spanish left is the relationship with Podemos. Martínez noted that Sumar learned of Podemos’s unilateral proposal for open primaries through the press rather than direct conversation. Despite this, Martínez emphasized that four organizations—Comuns, Más Madrid, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar—are currently working together within the parliamentary group, with intentions to engage other political forces such as Compromís and Chunta.
