Movimiento Sumar faces leadership crisis ahead of July 11 assembly

Spain's left‑wing coalition Movimiento Sumar is confronting a deep internal crisis as its secretary of organization, Laura Moreno, resigned, citing “injustices” and “lack of respect” from the current coordinator, Lara Hernández. Moreno’s departure follows accusations against Hernández of “concerning behavior” toward staff and alleged fraud in the party’s Valencia registration, which the leadership denies and frames as an internal political dispute.

In response, the party’s coordination board has scheduled an extraordinary assembly for 11 July to seek unity and chart a new direction. Candidate lists must be submitted by 30 June, with the final political and organisational programme to be released on 5 July. The assembly will likely renew the party’s leadership, though no decision on the coordinator’s re‑election has been made. Vice‑president of the Government and founder Yolanda Díaz will not attend, having stepped back from leading the movement after poor results in the 2024 European elections. The crisis has already led to a “drain of senior figures,” leaving only a few recognizable faces, such as spokesperson Ernest Urtasun.
