Movistar boss Eusebio Unzué on Tour de France challenges against Pogacar

Eusebio Unzué, 71, who has overseen 44 editions of the Tour de France as the manager of Spain’s Movistar team, said the squad’s realistic aim this year is to win a stage after their Belgian leader Cian Uijtdebroeks withdrew with gastroenteritis.

Unzué highlighted the dominant form of Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar and Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard, noting that they control the race and make it impossible for other teams to contest the overall victory. He reflected on how advances in equipment, aerodynamics and training have transformed cycling since his first Tour in 1983, but stressed that even with such technology, Pogacar’s package gives him an “open road” to showcase his dominance.

The interview also mentioned Movistar’s ongoing restructuring, including negotiations over the team’s future and the addition of a women’s squad led by Paula Blasi. Unzué concluded that while overall victory is out of reach, the team will focus on stage success and supporting the sport’s evolution.
