Movistar expands streaming leadership with new CEO and 1190 Sports subscriber surge

Movistar Plus in Spain reported 3.9 million paid subscribers in Q1, overtaking rivals such as SkyShowtime and Filmin. The service appointed Alfonso Gómez Palacio as its new CEO, revamping the editorial structure into content and sport divisions and dropping the “+” from its brand to become simply M+. New flexible subscription plans, including a free tier, aim to boost audience growth toward 4 million users by summer.

In Peru, the sports‑streaming platform 1190 Sports, which holds Liga 1 broadcast rights, said it now has over 1 million subscribers, 90 partners and annual growth exceeding 100 percent. The firm cited the entry of Movistar as an operator and the addition of the “U” competition in 2026 as key drivers of its expanding model.

Both developments illustrate a broader push by telecom operators and dedicated streaming services to capture larger audiences and diversify revenue through sports and entertainment content.
