Movistar Plus appoints María Rubín as head of Spanish cinema

Movistar Plus has appointed María Rubín as the new head of its Spanish cinema department. Rubín, who reports to Juan Andrés García Ropero, will lead the platform’s effort to develop, promote and distribute contemporary Spanish film, continuing the channel’s recent successes.

Rubín holds a degree in Information Sciences and a Master’s in The Business of Television from New York University. Within Movistar Plus and previously at Canal+, she has worked as a news producer, director of the short‑film unit, and overseen programmes such as "La Noche + Corta" and "Madonna: Pop & Clips". Outside the platform she has curated cultural projects for the Spanish Ministry of Culture, evaluated the Colombian Film Development Fund in 2015, and participated in the Next Gen Film FinLab.

In announcing the appointment, Rubín said, "When I least expected it, life gave me this surprise. It is a great challenge after a year of successes, but I bring a deep passion for Spanish cinema."

The move signals Movistar Plus’s intent to sustain a diverse and pluralistic slate of Spanish‑language films.
