Moyen-Chari mediators meet to prevent farmer-herder conflicts
In the Moyen-Chari province of Chad, stakeholders gathered in Sarh on October 2 and 3, 2026, to strengthen cooperation among agropastoral mediators. The initiative, supported by the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), aims to prevent conflicts between farmers and herders through enhanced dialogue and cooperation.
Participants, including sub-prefects, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations, addressed tensions arising from access to agricultural land, pastures, water points, and transhumance routes. With nearly two million head of cattle recorded in the region, the risk of crop damage by livestock remains a primary driver of community friction.
Beyond conflict prevention, discussions highlighted food security concerns. Participants advocated for better management of grain stocks and closer monitoring of fish and meat prices to ensure local market stability. A reflection committee is being established to transform these preventive recommendations into actionable strategies.
