Mozambique is facing significant economic and legal challenges. The government is moving to criminalize the smuggling of cashew nuts after an estimated 35,000 tons were illegally exported over the last three years, resulting in a loss of 457 million meticais to the state. Minister Roberto Albino has called for stricter penalties to protect national revenue and foreign exchange.

In legal developments, Mozambican businessman Norolamin Gulam has been sentenced to 135 months in a U.S. federal prison for his role in an international money laundering conspiracy. Authorities allege Gulam laundered at least $500 million in drug trafficking proceeds through various global networks. He was also ordered to pay a $7.5 million fine.

Domestically, Mozambique's GDP growth forecast has been revised downward to 0.9 percent, a significant drop from the initial 2.8 percent projection. Minister Salim Valá attributed this slowdown to economic shocks and the impact of recent floods.
