Mozambican leaders call for improved local content in mining and state projects
Business leaders and provincial officials in Mozambique are calling for reforms to ensure local economic benefits from large-scale industrial and mining projects.
In Tete province, entrepreneurs have urged the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) to advocate for increased participation of local companies in major projects. They cited difficulties in meeting the requirements of local content policies and expressed concern over delayed payments from the state, which impact the financial stability of national businesses. CTA President Álvaro Massingue noted that strengthening local content must be paired with training and capacity building to help Mozambican firms meet international standards.
In Nampula, Governor Eduardo Abdula emphasized that mineral exploitation should drive regional development rather than just increasing export volumes. Speaking at a national conference on strategic minerals, Abdula criticized current mining models that rely on sporadic charitable aid, such as food distribution, instead of structural investments like infrastructure and job creation. He argued that mining should act as a catalyst for national industrialization and the creation of local business opportunities.
