Mozambican police use tear gas to disperse Mondlane supporters

Mozambican police used tear gas to disperse supporters of politician Venâncio Mondlane in Quelimane, Zambezia province. The incident occurred during celebrations marking the first anniversary of Mondlane’s party, the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola).

Mondlane, who arrived in Quelimane on Friday, addressed supporters during a rally, stating that his party aims to win the 2028 municipal elections. He characterized ongoing legal proceedings against him, stemming from post-election protests in 2024, as attempts at intimidation. Mondlane asserted that he does not fear imprisonment or upcoming Supreme Court proceedings, claiming that his party intends to revolutionize the country.

Social media footage captured police repeatedly deploying tear gas as crowds fled the scene. Mondlane also suggested that the ruling Frelimo party fears losing electoral scrutiny to his movement.
