Mozambique accepts 284 UN human rights recommendations

The Mozambican government has accepted 284 out of 292 recommendations made by United Nations member states regarding the country's human rights situation. These recommendations were part of the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), following an interactive dialogue held in Geneva in May.

The accepted recommendations cover several key areas, including the strengthening of the rule of law and democratic institutions, access to justice, the promotion of equality and non-discrimination, and the protection of the rights of women, children, and persons with disabilities. There is also a focus on protecting vulnerable populations and enhancing cooperation with international and regional human rights mechanisms.

Minister of Justice, Constitutional Affairs and Religious Affairs, Mateus Saize, stated that the primary challenge is the effective implementation of these commitments. He emphasized that the review should serve as an opportunity for internal assessment and progress rather than just an international accountability exercise. Additionally, Ombudsman Isaque Chande called for the development of a national culture of respect for human rights, involving state institutions responsible for citizen security and protection.
