Mozambique advances biodiversity conservation and marine research

In Maputo, the Biodiversity Conservation Fund (BIOFUND) and the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) concluded a biodiversity conservation program. Funded by the Swedish government through SIDA, the initiative focused on ecosystem services, innovative conservation financing, and strengthening public policies to enhance climate resilience and community participation in resource management.

Simultaneously, Mozambique is working to bolster its marine biodiversity research capabilities. Through a scientific cruise involving the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Institute of Marine Research in Norway, researchers are collecting specimens within Mozambique's Exclusive Economic Zone. A portion of these specimens will be added to the Maputo Natural History Museum to facilitate local taxonomic studies and ensure scientific material is preserved within the country for future identification and research.
