Mozambique and Russia expand strategic economic and energy cooperation

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to strengthen bilateral relations across several strategic sectors, including energy, mining, agriculture, and transport. During the meetings, which coincided with the 8th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Chapo emphasized the need for greater coordination between gas producers and consumers to ensure global energy security.

Chapo highlighted Mozambique's potential in the natural gas market, noting that ongoing projects could increase the country's annual LNG export capacity to over 35 million tonnes. He also addressed the importance of diversifying Mozambique's economy beyond oil and gas through mining reforms and the creation of a National Mining Company.

In addition to energy, the two leaders discussed security cooperation, with Chapo acknowledging Russian support in training personnel for Mozambique's defense and security sectors. Bilateral trade between Russia and Mozambique reportedly nearly doubled between January and August 2026.

Separately, the Bank of Mozambique announced plans to purchase domestically produced gold to diversify its international reserves. Governor Felisberto Navalha stated that the central bank is coordinating with the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy to operationalize this strategy, which aligns with a projected 44% increase in national gold production for 2027.
