Mozambique and Congo seek economic ties through new trade and energy agreements
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo concluded a two-day official visit to the Republic of the Congo, aimed at transitioning diplomatic ties into concrete economic partnerships. During meetings with President Denis Sassou Nguesso and local business leaders in Pointe-Noire, the two leaders signed approximately ten agreements to strengthen cooperation.
A primary focus of the discussions was the creation of a logistical axis connecting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans by linking Congolese port capacities with major Mozambican ports in Maputo, Beira, and Nacala. This initiative seeks to serve landlocked markets and attract investment in logistics, industry, agriculture, and the blue economy.
Strategic sectors identified for enhanced cooperation include oil and gas, mining, forestry, tourism, and higher education. President Chapo highlighted Mozambique’s $60 billion oil and gas projects as a significant opportunity for Congolese companies to provide services in logistics, maintenance, transport, and catering. The leaders emphasized the importance of African-led solutions and the development of joint ventures between the private sectors of both nations to generate regional wealth and employment.
