Mozambique and Malawi power interconnection nears commercial operation
A new 218-kilometer electricity transmission line connecting Mozambique and Malawi is expected to enter commercial operation later this month. The project, which runs from Matambo in Tete to Phombeya in Malawi, has already been energized and is currently undergoing technical testing to ensure regular and definitive power transmission.
Financed by the World Bank, the German Bank, and the European Bank with a budget of $154 million, the interconnection is designed to add 120 megawatts to the Malawian grid. This infrastructure aims to bolster regional energy integration and support economic development in both nations.
This development comes as Malawi faces significant domestic energy challenges. The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has warned of increased blackouts due to a generation shortfall that reaches 83MW during evening peak hours. Technical failures at the Nkula A and Nkula B power plants have reduced available capacity, with some repairs requiring components to be sent to South Africa for reconditioning. The new interconnection from Mozambique is expected to help mitigate these deficits.
