Mozambique and Malawi sign agricultural trade agreement
Mozambique and Malawi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding sanitary and phytosanitary measures to facilitate agricultural trade and reduce cross-border barriers. The agreement, signed in Tete, aims to simplify the movement of agricultural products while ensuring the protection of human, animal, and plant health.
The initiative focuses on strengthening coordination between the two nations' agricultural institutions and harmonizing requirements to reduce delays at border posts. A key component of the agreement involves utilizing the Beira and Nacala transport corridors, which allow Malawi to access regional and international markets through Mozambican ports.
Officials from both countries noted that the agreement is intended to create more predictable and efficient trade flows. By improving the management of sanitary risks and pest control, the partnership seeks to bolster mutual trust and support the private sector in maintaining high quality-control standards for traded goods.
