Mozambique and Zimbabwe launch CPMZ pipeline expansion

Presidents Daniel Chapo of Mozambique and Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe have officially broken ground on a major expansion project for the Mozambique-Zimbabwe Pipeline Company (CPMZ). The project aims to increase the annual pumping capacity of the Beira-Harare fuel corridor from 3 million to 5 million cubic meters by the end of 2027, representing a 67% increase.

The expansion will allow for the transport of approximately two billion additional liters of fuel annually. This infrastructure is designed to strengthen energy security and reduce logistical bottlenecks for diesel, petrol, and jet fuel across Southern Africa. While primarily serving Zimbabwe, the corridor supports regional markets including Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project includes the construction of new pumping stations in Nhamatanda and Messica. Beyond fuel transport, Mozambican leadership expressed intentions to transform the Beira Corridor into a broader development platform featuring logistics centers, agro-processing, and special economic zones. CPMZ is also reportedly studying long-term upgrades that could eventually raise capacity to 12 million cubic meters to meet projected demand through 2050.
