Mozambique backs civil society for peace and urges tighter public finance management

The Mozambican government recognized the contribution of civil‑society organisations, religious confessions and other social actors to peace building during the Conference on the Architecture of Peace in Maputo. Inspector‑General Adjunct Jaime Lichache of the Ministry of Justice said, “Without peace there is no consistent economic development, education does not prosper and human rights are not consolidated,” emphasizing that lasting peace requires strong institutions, inclusive communities and active participation of all sectors.

President Daniel Chapo called for more efficient management of public finances to expand the state’s investment capacity. He likened public budgeting to a family or business, noting “the main challenge is to create space for investment.” The president rejected proposals that could raise living costs, and highlighted modest GDP growth of 0.1% in the first quarter of 2026, driven mainly by the tertiary sector, as the backdrop for his fiscal reforms.
