Mozambique Begins Construction of China-Funded National Surgical Center

President Daniel Chapo inaugurated the construction of the National Surgical Center at the Central Hospital in Maputo, marking a new phase of health cooperation between Mozambique and the People’s Republic of China. The project, financed with roughly 2.295 billion yuan (about $40 million), will provide 475 beds, 14 operating theatres and cover around 20,300 m². Completion is targeted within 24 months, after which the facility is expected to enhance the country's capacity for highly specialized surgeries and reduce reliance on overseas treatment.

The centre is part of a broader bilateral agenda that includes previous medical missions, equipment donations and plans for a National Trauma Center. President Chapo thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for the support, emphasizing the partnership’s role in strengthening Mozambique’s health sovereignty and improving outcomes for Mozambican patients.
