Mozambique Catholic leaders address martyrdom and unsolved bishop murder

The Catholic Church in Mozambique is addressing the legacies of religious figures killed in violence. Bishop Vera has confirmed the beatification process for Sister Maria de Coppi, an Italian nun who dedicated nearly 60 years to missionary service in Mozambique. She was killed during a September 2022 attack that destroyed a mission, including a church, school, and health center. The Bishop noted that local residents already regard her as a saint due to her service.

Separately, the Mozambique bishops’ conference expressed ongoing concern regarding the unsolved murder of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane. Found fatally shot in his residence in June, the circumstances and identity of the perpetrators remain unclarified. The conference stated that the lack of information regarding his death has left the diocese and the wider population in a state of perplexity and sorrow.
